This Week's Story - Sep, 2026
September 30 is Canada's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to honour Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities, and the children who never returned home.
The day also coincides with Orange Shirt Day, which grew from Phyllis Webstad's experience of having her orange shirt taken away when she arrived at residential school as a child. Her story helped inspire the message Every Child Matters.
A Different Perspective
It can be easy to think of September 30 simply as a day to wear orange. But the meaning goes much deeper.
The orange shirt reminds us of the children whose culture, identity, freedom, and sense of belonging were taken from them. It invites us to listen to the experiences of Indigenous Peoples and to learn more about the history and continuing impacts of residential schools.
Reconciliation asks more of us than remembering. It invites us to consider how we build relationships rooted in respect, understanding, dignity, and compassion.
From a spiritual perspective, truth asks us to be willing to see what is real, even when it is difficult. When we listen with open hearts, we create space for greater understanding and connection.
We may not be able to change the past, but we can choose how we meet this moment. We can learn, listen, reflect, and contribute to a more compassionate future.
The shift is from:
"I know about this"
to
"What am I willing to learn?"
